Bomb hoax at Wipro; IT firm terms it security drill

Express News Service

An anonymous letter delivered to the Sarjapur police on Friday had employees of the the Wipro Training Centre at Doddakannelli on Sarjapur Road on the tenterhooks. The letter stated that bombs were planted on the IT firm’s campus and would explode on Friday and Saturday.

After conducting a thorough search that lasted for over two hours, the premises was declared safe and the letter a hoax.

Soon after the letter was delivered on Friday, the local police alerted their seniors and an anti-sabotage squad and dog squad were pressed into service.

When no explosive substance was found on the campus, the police called it a hoax mail. The letter had a postal stamp that shows it was posted on July 18.

The letter written in English read: “No miss big bomb explode. 11 am morning Friday 19 July 2013 at Wipro Sarjapur at Corporation block and training blockfloor. And Saturday 1 pm afternoon. 19 bombs 5 minutes. You die building damage. Jihad.”

“As it was already 1.30 pm, we felt it was a prank letter but did not take it lightly. The HSR Layout police were alerted to inspect the spot immediately. Police suspect that miscreants may have sent the letter to create panic among the IT company staff. They seem to be aware of the location of certain offices on the campus as the letter clearly mentions training block as one of the targets,” police said. The HSR Layout police registered a case in this connection and are on the lookout for the miscreants. Wipro, however maintained that it was a routine security check.

“As a matter of routine, a security check was undertaken at Wipro’s Sarjapur campus. Our operations continue to be business as usual,” a company statement said. Exactly a month ago, the ISRO Telemetry, Tracking and Command Network in Peenya had received a terror threat letter.
