The DMK-led Tamil Eelam Supporters Organisation (TESO) demanded that the Centre introduce a resolution on the Sri Lankan issue in Parliament. It urged the Centre to take a leaf out of UK Prime Minister David Cameron’s book and take a tough line with Sri Lanka over war crimes and human rights abuses at the end of the nation’s bloody civil war.
These were among the resolutions adopted by TESO after a meeting of its members and special invitees on Sunday morning. The meeting was attended by TESO members DMK patriarch M Karunanidhi, Dravidar Kazhagam president K Veeramani, Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi chief Thol Thirumavalavan, Dravida Iyakka Tamilar Peravai leader Suba Veerapandian and senior DMK functionary Subbulakshmi Jagaddesan. The special invitees at the meeting included DMK heir M K Stalin, Lok Sabha party leader T R Baalu, organising secretary TKS Elangovan and K S Radhakrishnan.
The meeting adopted a resolution critical of the Centre’s decision to take part in the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meet (CHOGM) in Sri Lanka, and urged the Centre to emulate British Prime Minister David Cameron’s ultimatum to the Sri Lankan government demanding an independent, international probe into war crimes and human rights abuses.
“Cameron, who does not have any direct stake in the Sri Lankan Tamils issue, has taken such a tough stance. But India has not taken a strong approach, despite having emotional and moral stake and responsibility in the issue. The participation of External Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid in the summit cannot be defended in any way,” read the resolution.
TESO urged the Centre to adopt a resolution in Parliament demanding an independent, international inquiry into war crimes, human rights abuses and genocide in Sri Lanka.
