Bookies To Be Charged Under Goonda Act, Says Reddi

BENGALURU: The city police have decided to book those involved in cricket betting and gambling under the Goonda Act. Chennammanakere Achuchukattu police on Saturday arrested a gang of five men who were involved in cricket betting and seized `7 lakh.

Speaking to reporters, City Police Commissioner M N Reddi said those caught by the police for betting, gambling and selling drugs get bail within a week and are released. They revert to similar illegal activities soon. “To control such incidents we have decided to book them under the Goonda Act and they will be in prison for a year.”

He said in view of IPL matches, many people are involved in betting and the city police are keeping an eye on some of the accused running betting rackets. “So far we have arrested many and will conduct raids on gambling and betting centres as we have taken the issue very seriously,” he added.
