VYALIKAVAL: Godkhindi Music and Edutainment Private Limited and State Bank of India, in aid of SBI Pinkathon, present The Flute Rocks, a grand fusion concert featuring Pravin Godkhindi at 7 pm on Friday at Chowdaiah Memorial Hall. The event will be hosted by Vinayak Joshi and also feature Kiran Godkhindi, Pradyumna, Umesh, Shadaj Godkhindi and popular magician Prahalad Acharya.
Pravin Godkhindi is the first Indian to perform on the 8-foot-long contrabass flute. This flute is usually made of steel, alloy or PVC and is almost five inches in diameter. The flautist has to stand and play this instrument, which plays two octaves below the bansuri. Pravin has renamed the instrument as God’s bansi, meaning God’s flute.
A left-handed flautist, Pravin had to unlearn and relearn the basics to master this new instrument, which is designed for right-handed flautists. The artiste has been practising the instrument for the past two years. Apart from playing typical jazz and rock tunes, Pravin has discovered innovative approaches and techniques to perform Indian classical ragas. He will be the first musician in the world to try gamaks and meends (glides) on this massive bass instrument.
The event will feature Pravin’s son, Shadaj Godkhindi, on flute and drums. Highlights of the show include a unique jugalbandi of flute and shadow play with Prahalad Acharya, new and innovative compositions and a few surprises that Pravin is tight-lipped about.
The event is associated with SBI Pinkathon, a marathon to raise awareness about breast cancer, and a part of the proceeds will go towards this cause. The concert is presented by SBI, Airtel, Hungry Bells, and Meraj Designer Studio, while The New Indian Express is the media partner.
