Relative Accuses Godman Maruti of Sexual Abuse

Express News Service

BENGALURU: Self-proclaimed godman Maruti Guruji of Bangaramakki has been accused of sexual assault by one of his relatives, who filed a complaint with the Director General of Police Lalrokhuma Pachuau on Friday.

The complainant alleged that guruji, also known as Maruthi Bhat, has threatened to kill her. She said she was being sexually harassed by the guruji because he wanted a one acre and 13 gunta land belonging to the complainant.

According to the complainant, it all started a few years ago when she refused to hand over the land to Maruti Guruji and his family. She alleged that last October, Maruti Guruji threatened to rape her when she was home alone. Later that month, she overheard the guruji and other family members planning to kill her. One day in October, he locked her up in a room for an entire night, she alleged. However, she managed to escape the next day to a relative’s house.

Her relatives helped her file a complaint with the Honnavar police via post. Police personnel then visited Maruti Guruji’s house inquiring about her. However, guruji and his family members said she had been missing and filed a complaint.

She, however, stayed in hiding in the relative’s house, waiting for the Honnavar police to take some action.

Months passed but the Honnavar police neither took action nor tried to give her any protection. Disappointed, she approached the DGP on Friday, she said.
