The Magnificent Rock Art of the Karla Caves

Express News Service

BENGALURU: The Karla caves are multi-faceted ancient Indian Buddhist shrines carved out of a sheer rock face located about 10-12 kilometres from Lonavala in Maharashtra. The caves were traditionally connected with the Mahasanghmika sect of Buddhism and later with Hinduism and are of great historical significance and also representative samples of ancient Buddhist architecture.

The caves are a good picnic spot as they provide a good view of the surrounding valleys and hills. However, you must be prepared  to climb a lot of steps to reach the top. The best time to visit is during monsoon or winter because the weather is extremely pleasant during this time and it makes the climb east. Make sure you carry your food and water in case you are thinking of a picnic on the top.

The Ekvira Temple is just located outside the caves and although it is a fairly steep climb, it well worth your time. Intricately designed with Buddhist stupas and pillars, this temple is an insight into the magnificent past.

Despite being a protected monument under the ASI, the place could definitely do with better maintenance as it is quite dirty and even smells in parts. This apart, the Karla caves are also interesting as they also formed lodgings for travelling monks and others.

The 350 steps  up to the complex are worth climbing if only to see the striking cave art and the motifs that provide insight into the life and times of the period. Developed between the 2nd century BC and 10th century AD, these caves include grand halls and pillars with various elements of Buddhist iconography.
