Simple Tips that can Cure a Hangover

Don’t be surprised if you wake up with splitting headache, sickness, dizziness, dehydration if you have consumed large quantity of alcohol.

“The chances of the person having hangover increases if he consumes it in a larger quantity,” said, Dr Johnson Pradeep, assistant professor, Department of Psychiatry, St John’s Medical College and Hospital.

Symptoms of hangover

The usual symptoms in an alcohol hangover includes headache, nausea, vomiting, fatigue, thirst, muscle pains, disturbed sleep, sensitivity to light and sound, disturbed attention.

“Alcohol consumption also makes the person feel the need to urinate frequently. It can lead to dehydration, trigger an inflammatory response to the immune system, reduce blood glucose levels,” said Dr Tajeswi Nataraj, consultant internal medicine, BGS Global Hospital.

Medications to cure hangover

● Drinking adequate water or fruit juices can help cure dehydration

● Consuming bland foods or thin soups can improve hypoglycemia and replace salt and potassium.

● Caffeine also has been found to be helpful.

● Pantoprazole or Ranitidine can be used to reduce gastric irritation and nausea.

● The non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) such as aspirin and naproxen sodium has been found to be helpful in reducing the headache. However, people with severe liver problems must be careful while consuming it.
