One Day in the Life of Sarasamma

Nagesh Polali

BENGALURU:

1   Sarasamma, a pourakarmika, has been serving the residents of Vasanthanagar for more than 23 years. But, the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike has asked her to vacate the one-room hovel,  which she called home for 20 years. Though it was in shambles, she found comfort here.

2 She lived with her son, his wife and grandchildren. Now she is forced to rent another house.

3.  But she continues to do her job without complaining.

4/5.  She has been diligently segregating dry waste from wet, as encouraged by BBMP.

6. After covering 14th Cross, 5th Main and 6th Main and three other lanes, she leaves the garbage for the trucks to collect.

7. The only pleasure she gets at the end of the day is a cup of chai. She hopes the government will grant her a room which she can call home.
