BENGALURU: With the Metro station works near Vidhana Soudha almost complete, work on creating a sprawling garden between High Court and Vidhana Soudha will kickstart on Monday.

“E-tenders will be called on January 25 to develop this four-acre area into a garden, which is sandwiched between these two historic buildings,” said Mahantesh Murgod, Deputy Director of Cubbon Park (Horticulture Department). “The garden had to be dismantled in 2011 to facilitate the Metro underground station work,” he said.

“Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited had already deposited Rs 1.5 crore with the Horticulture department for the purpose,” said S B Bommanahalli, Director of Horticulture.

Work is slated to begin in March and the garden would be ready by June.

This would be three months after the proposed Metro service on the East-West Corridor in the stretch between M G Road and Magadi Road becomes operational.

Providing sprinklers for watering purposes and planting varieties of small plants and shrubs are among the main features of this upcoming garden, Murgod said.

“Trees cannot be planted here as Vidhana Soudha Metro station lies beneath and it could affect the building in the long run,” Murgod said.

Lawns, Mexican grass, topiary (those in which foliage and twigs are clipped to resemble various shapes, particularly animals) will be among the ones planted here. The medians will have exotic flowers and ornamental plants.

“Apart from creating the garden, the contractor needs to maintain it for one year from when it is ready,” he added.

The tenders were supposed to be called for on January 23 but due to server issues late in the evening, the upload could not take place, officials said.
