BENGALURU: In an attempt to encourage more people to use public transport and reduce short-change problems, the BMTC on Thursday revised AC and non AC bus fares.

As reported by the New Indian Express earlier, minimum charge of ordinary buses will remain unchanged with Rs 5, the second stage is reduced from Rs 12 to Rs 10. The third stage fare has increased from Rs 14 to Rs 15, while the fourth stage (Rs 17) and fifth stage (Rs 19) fares remain the same.

One stage is equal to 2 km. Similarly, the minimum fare of AC buses has reduced from Rs 15 to Rs 10 (for the first stage).

"The revision will reduce change problems and also attract more people to the public transport," said Transport minister Ramalinga Reddy.

The New Indian Express  had reported on February 24 that BMTC is likely to round off the fare in some stages after increasing complaints of conductors not returning change.

The BMTC's proposed smart card to enable cashless payments still remains on paper.
