BENGALURU: Public transport needs to be enhanced in a big way within 15 years to facilitate easy commuting in the city, says a detailed analytical report readied by the BDA in connection with its Draft Revised Master Plan 2031.
Bearing in mind a population of 2 crore-plus in 2031, a jump from the present 1.15 crore population, the report calls for enhancing the Metro network and Bus Rapid Transport. It also bats for Monorail and Commuter rail systems.
A report on the proposed draft plan has been uploaded on the BDA website (www.bdabangalore.org) and public opinion sought for it before Draft Revised Master Plan 2031 is readied.
Using surveillance camera feeds at 50 locations and analysis of 375 km of road network, the analysis calls for introducing 2,300 more bus routes.
“We need 200 km more of Metro network, 24 more bus depots, five truck terminals (only one exists at Whitefield presently) and a dedicated bus bay for 227 km,including Elevated Bus Road Transit,” said M N Kumar, Joint Director, Town Planning, BDA.
On the traffic front, it has concluded that the journey speed on the city’s streets is set to reduce to 8 kmph by 2031. During the peak hours, it would be 5kmph. The average journey speed was 18 kmph in 2008 and 11 kmph in 2015.The draft also suggests that the vehicular trips per day will be triple to that of the nearly 10 million undertaken in 2015.The city has been divided into 42 planning districts, down from the present 47 districts.
