RailYatri's prediction is nearly 110 per cent better than the existing way of estimating train travel time, it claimed.

BENGALURU: Close on the heels of a mobile app launched last week to alert passengers about the accurate train timings, a travel start-up has come out with a technique to predict Estimated Arrival Time (ETA) with a precision based on the past data.

According to RailYatri, an online portal for Indian Railways, train travellers have accepted delays as part of their train journeys but their 'frustration arises from the inability of the existing systems to correctly guide them on the ETA of trains'. This leaves commuters stranded at platforms endlessly.

The unique ETA prediction algorithm uses Machine Learning and Statistically Modelling techniques to predict the arrival time of the running trains at their upcoming stoppage with much better precision. "The algorithm has been trained to analyse historical data of the train runs spread over many years and predict the future outcome," the release said.

RailYatri's prediction is nearly 110 per cent better than the existing way of estimating train travel time, it claimed.

Kapil Raizada, co-founder of RailYatri said, "The ETA prediction based on historical data is a much better technique as it takes proper considerations of ground realities such as increasing traffic, rush, seasonality, etc."

It added, "Based on the symptoms exhibited by a running train, the ETA prediction algorithm matches through millions of permutations of patterns to make an optimised prediction in real time."
