BENGALURU : Last month, seven-year old Mahati Subramaniam, daughter of renowned vocalist and songwriter, Bindu Subramaniam, and grand daughter of maestros Dr L Subramaniam and Kavita Krishnamurti Subramaniam, recorded her first ever solo song, Surangani, a Sinhalese folk song.
The class two student of National Public School, Rajajinagar, is no newcomer to the stage — her first performance was at the Siddhivinayak Temple, Mumbai when she was around three.

The idea for recording came about when the family was travelling to Sri Lanka for a performance earlier this year. The young girl plays the violin and piano, in addition to voice training. "Mahati asked Ma (Padmashri-awardee and Bollywood playback singer Kavita Krishnamurti) to teach her the song, which is when Ma also suggested that we record Surangani — a popular song with the older generation, that is assumed to be Indian," says Bindu.

The song has been shared on digital platforms and is part of the SaPa & School programme. Mahati is already planning her next move. "She wants to compose her own song. Mahati enjoys the idea of recording songs," Bindu says.
