BENGALURU: Citizens in Iblur are trying to save about 10 trees which they had planted years ago, as the trees are facing the axe to pave the way for a storm water drain.

According to a resident, Kashinath Prabhu, the construction of a storm water drain connecting Ibbalur Lake to Bellandur Lake was requested by the residents themselves. However, when they found that a few trees would have to be cleared for the project, they started exploring solutions to see if the trees can be saved by translocation.

“The officials said the trees were too big to be translocated, so we are trying to do that on our own. We have already moved the smaller plants. We have consulted ‘tree doctor’ Vijay Nishant and a forest official will also inspect the area on Monday,” Prabhu said. He added that other solutions were also being mooted, such as cutting branches instead of trees.

On Monday, local residents protested after workers chopped one of the trees.Later, the workers agreed to put a hold on the project to allow the residents to come up with a solution.
