BENGALURU: With a view to boost the admissions for Undergraduate programmes across various disciplines for the academic year 2026–27, Dr Manmohan Singh Bengaluru City University and the Bangalore University are vying to attract more students to their own campuses, as well as colleges affiliated to them.

The Bangalore University has issued two circulars to all affiliated colleges, instructing them to promote admissions via print, television and social media platforms. Dr Manmohan Singh University has also conducted two rounds of meetings with principals and lecturers of all PU colleges to send their students to the university and its affiliated colleges.

The Bengaluru City University has also decided to start admissions on the next day of the second PU results. Vice Chancellor Prof Ramesh B said, “Every year, our admission process would start late, in May.

This year, we will begin it on April 8, the next day of the release of the second PU exam -1 results. Besides, we have conducted meetings with the principals of hundreds of PU colleges to make them aware of the courses available here.

We have also told them that their students can enroll for UG programmes in our university through the UUCMS website. Around 240 degree colleges are affiliated to our university with more than 35,000 students.”

Prof Ramesh said the varsity is introducing a few short-term diploma and certificate courses this year, including in Artificial Intelligence and Computer Science. “This is being done to keep students’ knowledge in sync with the job requirements in future. We also face stiff competition from private universities and deemed universities.

They have already closed admissions for UG courses. We need to sustain in the competition. The fee is low in our universities which is Rs 15,000 per year and for girls, the fee gets reimbursed along with a scholarship amount as well.”

Ramesh said streams such as social sciences, humanities and science, including BSc, have lost their charm among students because of poor job prospects. Commerce and management courses are high in demand and the seats get filled quickly.

The Bangalore University has a strong academic network comprising around 270 affiliated colleges, offering nearly 70,000 seats for various UG programmes.

A total of 220 UG courses, including multiple subject combinations, are available to cater to diverse academic interests. There is significant demand for science and technology-oriented programmes, particularly for forensic science, zoology, microbiology, commerce and BCA (including Full Stack Development and AI-related courses), varsity officials said.

ACTION SOUGHT AGAINST PES VARSITY PROF

Bengaluru: Taking serious note of the recent incident at PES University where a professor called a student from a minority community a “terrorist” , around 397 people from various associations, including Bahutva Karnataka, a group of civil rights activists, have sent an open letter to PES University chancellor Jawahar Doreswamy seeking strict action against the professor.

“How do you create an ethically strong workforce from among your students when faculty members such as Dr Muralidhar Deshpande, who has been accused of calling the student a ‘terrorist’, seem to lack not just ethics, but also humanity?” Expressing concern over the incident, they said Affan, the student who was attacked by the professor, was suspended. News reports indicate that the CCTV footage of the incident has been deleted. There is no public apology over the incident from the university. Being a top ranked educational institution in the state, the university should create a peaceful and harmonious environment where all students and faculty members are treated with dignity.
