BHUBANESWAR: The state is set to witness a temporary respite from the prolonged heavy rain spell, which has caused widespread floods in the northern districts, as the IMD has forecast the weather system to weaken from Wednesday.
As per the prediction, the depression is expected to continue to move west-northwestwards across Jharkhand and Bihar and weaken into a well-marked low pressure area within 24 hours.
Director of Bhubaneswar Meteorological Centre Manorama Mohanty also said that rainfall is likely to reduce from Wednesday. “There is no forecast of heavy showers either in the next three days,” she added. The rain fury may, however, make a comeback in the state from this weekend as weather models have indicated formation of another fresh upper air cyclonic circulation/low pressure area over the north Bay of Bengal off Bangladesh-West Bengal coasts in the coming days.
Though the regional met office has not yet forecast any detail about the anticipated weather system, it has predicted light to moderate rains or thundershower activity in many places of Odisha from Saturday onwards.
In the last 24 hours ending at 8.30 am on Tuesday, two places in Mayurbhanj district recorded extremely heavy rainfall (204.5 mm or more). Bahalda recorded the highest rainfall of 270 mm, followed by Rairangpur 210 mm. Jharbandh in Bargarh and Jamda in Mayurbhanj experienced very heavy showers, recording 150 mm and 120 mm rains respectively.
