CHENNAI: Crime branch officers of  the suburban police arrested three persons involved in a huge fake government documents business on Wednesday. Acting on a tip off that Kalyani aka Kalyana Sundaram, a kingpin in the fake documents business, was operating out of the Manali area, a suburban crime branch team led by ACP Jay Kumar raided the place and arrested the prime suspect.

His interrogation exposed the entire truth of their operations. Kalyani had allegedly been making fake RC books, licences and vehicle insurance for lorries and other motors across the southern states. About 200 rubber stamps of various government offices, 55 fake licences and 35 RC books were seized from his premises in Kodambakkam.

Kalyani, it seems, has been a master of forged signatures since a very young boy. He worked as a broker for the RTO office in Chetpet for 15 years, which taught him the ways and means to get around official documents smartly. He also made enough contacts to get original papers for printing etc from government offices. Kalyani has been arrested twice before and operated very remotely.

“His services were mostly used by lorries shuttling between different states to transport illegal goods like liquor. He was a main agent for many people in Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra,” said ACP Jay Kumar.

Two of his workers - Zakir Hussain (42) and Subburaj Perumalsamy (32) were also arrested along with him. They have been remanded to judicial custody.
