CHENNAI: The Hindustan Institute of Maritime Training (HIMT) on Wednesday said they had acquired permission from the Kalpakkam Nuclear Installation Local Authority Committee to set up an institute in the vicinity.

Reacting to a photo published with the report ‘Government losing crores due to illegal structures’ in these columns on August 3, HIMT managing director Sanjeev S Vakil said the zone has been reclassified as Educational Zone for which a Government Order (GO MS No 32) has been issued from the Secretariat.

“We have paid the development charges and are paying necessary taxes from 2006,” he said. “We also have all other statutory approvals including permission from the fire authority,” he added.

Vakil said that they have submitted their application to the District Town and Country Planning authorities for further action.
