CHENNAI: Burglars broke into a house inside MGR Garden in Ramapuram, the premises that was once home for former chief minister M G Ramachandran, and decamped with cash and articles, estimated to be worth Rs 3 lakh, when the residents were away.

The robbery came to light on Monday when the family of Geetha Madhu Mohan, adopted daughter of MGR’s wife, V N Janaki, returned from Kerala.

Geetha Madhu Mohan and her husband Madhu Mohan had left for Kerala on December 25 after their son got married on December 20. According to Madhu Mohan, when he opened the front door, he found potatoes that were actually stacked in a sack strewn on the floor of the house, located on the first floor of the building behind the house in which MGR lived.

When he rushed to the bedroom, he found that the window was broken and its rim being removed. One of the two almirahs, for which the keys were left in the bedroom was opened and wedding gifts that included silver tumblers and plates, gold coins and wristwatches and cash were missing.

“The other almirah had gold jewellery of the bride. Luckily we had left the keys of that almirah in a different place. All the gifts had been opened and wrappers and cartons were left on the bed. A laptop that was in the bedroom was untouched,” informed Madhu Mohan. The sack that had potatoes had been used to carry the booty.

According to Geetha, two other families, both relatives of MGR were residing at the Ramapuram MGR Gardens. Both the families were away because of the wedding.

“Two people may have been involved in the robbery. We suspect that it could be someone who knows the place well. We have taken fingerprints and we are investigating,” said N Hariharan, crime inspector, Nandambakkam police station.
