CHENNAI: In order to keep pace with the increasing flow of freights to railway terminals, the Railside Warehousing Complex has been inaugurated at Korukkupet Railway Goods Shed here on Thursday.

The railside warehousing complex was envisaged by the Central Warehousing Corporation for evacuation of freight and quicker turnaround of rail wagons thus creating a win-win situation to CWC of Indian railway and their trade.

The Korukkupet warehousing project was developed by CWC at a total cost of Rs 27 crore in two phases. The first phase is ready for operation and was commissioned on Thursday, while the second phase is expected to be ready for commercial operations by December 2009.

Once the project facilities of both the phases are made functional this railside warehousing complex will have a capacity to deal with 5 rakes on a daily basis.

The MoU for developing the complex at Korukkupet goods terminal was signed by the Chennai division of Southern Railways and Central Warehousing Corporation in September 2007.

The warehousing complex alongside line number 2 has a holding capacity of 12, 000 metric tonnes, the shed number 2 alongside line number 3 has a holding capacity of 18, 500 metric tonnes.

CWC would also provide and maintain all ancillary facilities required for smooth operations of the complex such as fully computerised air conditioned office block, said BB Patnaik, Chairman of Central Railside Warehouse Company Ltd and also chairman and managing director of CWC.

The complex will provide warehousing services to the users at a cheaper cost when compared to the cost of wharsage, which makes the transportation cost effective and hassle-free to the users.
