CHENNAI: Legal heirs of five Tamil writers have declined the offer of the Stategovernment to nationalise their works.

Though the government had offered to nationalise the works of 22 Tamil scholars, the legal heirs of five scholars – poet Kannadasan, Dr M Varadharajan, writers Sandilyan, Sundara Ramasamy and Lakshmi have declined to accept the offer.

Putting into effect the announcement made in the budget for 2009-10, the Chief Minister on Saturday ordered payment of compensation of Rs five lakh each to the legal heirs of nine Tamil scholars – poet Azha Valliappa, Pandithamani M Kathiresan Chettiyar, R Chokkalinganar, N Nachiappan, Puliyur Kesikan, Chinna Annamalai, Vaduvur Duraiswamy Iyengar and M Ragavaiyangar – for nationalising their works.

Similarly, Rs three lakh would be given to the families of 12 Tamil scholars – Vaiyapuri Pillai, Pammal Sambandar, Chidambaranathan Chettiyar, MS Poornalingam Pillai, TM Bhaskara Thondaiman, Kannappa Mudaliyar, VM Kothainayaki, Poovai S Arumugam, NV Kalaimani, poet Murugusundaram, poet T Kovendan and A K Navaneetharkiruttinan, an official release here said.

Further, on knowing that veteran writer Rajam Krishnan is ailing in a hospital, the Chief Minister ordered payment of Rs three lakh as compensation for nationalising her works.
