CHENNAI: Distressed and deceived by her husband, who had ill-treated her and absconded with her cash and jewellery, a 23-year-old woman from Porur appealed to the Suburban Commissioner of Police S R Jangid, to either find him and tell him to lead a peaceful life with her or get adequate compensation from him. She was directed to the SRMC police station.

Dhanalakshmi from Tiruchy met Lawrence (25) from Thanjavur, two years ago through a common friend in Chennai. They fell in love and both started to work together in a popular home appliances company at Jafferkhanpet in the city. Promising to marry her one day, Lawrence made her stay with him in a room at Porur.

They lived together for two years. While Dhanalakshmi got a job in a factory at Sriperumbudur, Lawrence wanted to start a printing press of his own for which he took cash of Rs 75,000 and seven sovereigns gold jewellery from Dhanalakshmi.

Though Lawrence started his business in Porur with Dhanalakshmi’s money, he refused to marry her.

The woman lodged a complaint at SRMC police station in June and after the police intervened and warned him, Lawrence agreed to marry her.

They got married in July in Tirupur and returned to the city after a month. After they alighted at the Koyembedu bus terminus, Lawrence asked Dhanalakshmi to wait at the bus stop and disappeared.

Dhanalakshmi claimed that her husband had ill-treated her in the period they lived together after marriage. She had even visited her husband’s family in Thanjavur to try and locate him but her in-laws did not disclose where he was.

“My mother knew about my marriage. Initially, she supported me but now my entire family is not willing to help me out. I have no one to support me. I want the police to intervene and find my husband and tell him to live with me or just get me enough compensation,” said Dhanalakshmi.
