CHENNAI: Around 40 orphanages in the Tiruvallur district have been identified and issued notices to follow the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, said Tiruvallur district SP M C Sarangan.

The district police had arrested Rev Sadhu Immanuvel (60), the caretaker of Sahityam Charitable Trust, Vellur village for sexually torturing an inmate Revathi (18). Following her complaint, police inspected the orphanage. Inmates including eight women and two young boys were rescued and handed over to the social welfare officer.

Tiruvallur is one of the eight districts identified by the State government to eradicate trafficking of women and children. SP Sarangan said “It was because of the inputs they got in the training, the police officer acted swiftly in the case and arrested Sadhu Immanuel.”

District police along with the revenue department have inspected more than 40 orphanages in the district and issued instructions to them to follow the act.

“If the homes were not registered with the government, we have given a stipulated time period to finish the registration,” he added.
