CHENNAI: The 10-year-old recipient of a heart from A P Hitendran (15), who died in a road accident last year, died at a private hospital on Sunday evening.

Abirami, whose case shot into news after a heart transplant was performed on her in record time, was reportedly admitted to the hospital on Sunday morning.

According to reports, she passed away at 8 pm on Sunday due to arrythmia or abnormal electrical activity in the heart, which causes the heart to beat at irregular speeds.

Meanwhile it is reliably learnt that Dr S Ashokan, the father of Hithendran had spoken to Abirami last month and that she had been fine then. Hospital authorities confirmed the death. Abirami’s parents have now come forward to donate her eyes.

Dr Ashokan and Dr Pushpanjali’s son Hitendran was injured in a bike accident last year and admitted at the Apollo Speciality Hospital, where he was declared brain dead. His parents decided to donate his organs.

While his corneas were sent to Sankara Nethralaya, the heart was sent to Frontier Lifeline hospital at Mogappair with the help of city police, who brought the heart to the hospital within 11 minutes.
