CHENNAI: India’s first successful split liver transplant was performed at the Global Hospitals here on September 16.
According to the hospital authorities, the transplantation involved dividing a cadaver donor liver into two halves for transplantation on two patients as life saving procedures.
The operation was performed under the leadership of Dr Mohamed Rela, a world renowned liver transplant surgeon.
The donor liver came from a young man who died in a road accident in Salem. His parents were keen that his organs be used for transplantation. His liver then was used on two recipients.
The liver was split, during the retrieval operation, into a smaller ones _ the left lobe for transplantation on a young girl and the larger right lobe for transplantation on woman with end stage liver disease.
The donor procedure and the two transplant operations took over 20 hours and involved a team of six surgeons, six anesthetists and a large number of support staff. Both recipients were recovering, hospital authorities said.
