CHENNAI: Parsis in the city should organise an international conference to discuss ways to deal with their "shrinking community" status, said former President Dr APJ Abdul Kalam here.
Inaugurating the three-day celebration marking the centenary of Atash Adran - Fire Temple of Madras Parsi Zoroastrian Anjuman - here on Saturday, July 10, 2010, Kalam said Parsis across the globe should be brought in for the conference to devise ideas to enrich their community.
"Whenever I meet my Parsi friends, young and experienced, there is a feeling that despite the Parsi society being enlightened and courageous, their numbers are shrinking in India. The reasons for it should be found," he said, stressing on the need for the conference.
Recalling the contributions of Parsi community to the development of Indian economy, Kalam said, "I visualise the Parsi society will create many more great human beings like Sir Jemshetjee Jejeebhoy, Homi Bhabha, Tata family and Mary Clubwala Jadhav."
The Parsi community migrated to Chennai in the pre-Independence era. Philanthropist Phiroj M Clubwala who helped strengthen the foundation of the community here donated the Fire Temple at Royapuram to the The Madras Parsi Zarthosti Anjuman. The Parsi Club was later built in 1930 in his honour.
The club is the meeting place for the community members for events, cultural activities and social celebrations.
The three-day celebration will have a mix of rituals and entertainment. As part of the celebrations, internationally acclaimed musician Gary Lawyer will perform at the club on Sunday.
