CHENNAI: The prestigious Anna University, Chennai, reverted to its pre-2001 status of a unitary teaching university on Friday through an amendment to the Anna University, Chennai Act 1978 (Act No 30 of 1978), in the Assembly.

With the amendment, Anna University (unitary type) would comprise College of Engineering, Guindy, all the departments of Alagappa Chettiar College of Technology, Guindy, and Madras Institute of Technology, Chrompet.

Bills were also passed for the establishment of affiliating type technical universities in Chennai and Madurai in the name of Anna to ensure better and effective monitoring of engineering colleges.

Affiliating type universities in Chennai and Madurai were set up through the Anna University of Technology, Chennai Bill, 2010 (jurisdiction over Chennai, Kanchi, Tiruvallur, Vellore, Tiruvannamalai and Villupuram) and the Anna University of Technology, (covering Madurai, Dindigul, Theni, Ramanathapuram and Sivaganga) Madurai Bill, 2010. The names of Anna Universities (affiliating type) in Tiruchy, Coimbatore and Tirunelveli have been changed to ‘Anna Universities of Technology’ through another amendment bill.

The TN Cooperative Societies (Second Amendment) Bill, 2010 and TN Civil Courts and the Chennai City Civil Court (Amendment) Bill, 2010 were among the other bills that were passed on Friday.

: Dr K Karunakaran has been appointed as the new vice-chancellor of Anna University Coimbatore. Karunakaran was a professor and director of the Centre for Water Resources while heading the Department of Civil Engineering of the Anna University Chennai.
