CHENNAI: Textbooks for civil and mechanical engineering courses in Tamil were released here on Wednesday by Anna University Vice Chancellor Mannar Jawahar. The university introduced mechanical and civil engineering courses in Tamil from this academic year for the benefit of rural and Tamil medium students.

“While the syllabus and curriculum were ready by June, the textbook took some time to be published,” Jawahar said. Textbooks for first semester alone are available now. “Books for the next semester will be released in a month’s time. The entire course material will be ready by the year-end,” promised the V-C. He also informed that more engineering courses would be available in Tamil by the next academic year.

“From our interactions and experience with the students who opted for the course in Tamil, we learnt that the students do find it easier to learn subjects in their mother tongue. The technical terms have not entirely been translated to pure Tamil as the students may not understand. The aim is not to push Tamil as medium of instruction but to ease the learning process,” Jawahar added.

He said students were also being given training in English for six semesters to improve communication skills and compete in the job market.
