CHENNAI: A 19-year-old girl deserted her parents as they forced her to tie the knot against her wish here on Monday. Preeti of TVK Nagar reportedly had a close relationship with her friend. Her parents tried to get her married against her will. Protesting against this, she left the house last week and sought refuge with the human rights organisation, Sangama.
A representative of Sangama said, “Preeti told us that she liked the company of her close female friend and was not interested in marriage. As she was earning on her own, Preethi expressed her desire to lead a separate life.’’
Meanwhile, Preeti’s parents lodged a complaint with police and requested them to trace her. Preeti, who was brought to the police station, said that she did not like to live with her parents. The police tried to arrive at a temporary solution, asking her to stay with her relatives to which Preeti agreed.
