CHENNAI: V S Natarajan has been honoured by the Union Government with lifetime achievement award for his exemplary contribution to the field of geriatrics. Minister of Social Justice and Empowerment Mukul Wasnik would give away the award to Dr Natarajan on World Elder’s Day on October 1.

A pioneer in the field of Geriatric Medicine in the country, Dr Natarajan told Express that he was overwhelmed by the news.

Dr Natarajan served as Member of Royal College of Physician in Edinburgh, London, and returned to Chennai in 1978. Later, he joined as the first Professor in Geriatric Medicine at Madras Medical College here and served there till 1997. Subsequently, he became an active member of senior citizens bureau —- a voluntary organisation working for elders. He is credited with the launching of geriatric house call programme to treat elderly patients at their home. He published over 50 research papers.
