WHEN kids take centre stage, they amuse us with their spontaneity in doing activities, like dancing or singing. Even a well-rehearsed group of kids, with their mischievous action make us laugh.
And these kids at The Runaway (a short musical) and more, presented by Crotchets & Quavers were no different.
The beautifully composed children’s choir, which was held recently at the Museum Theatre, Egmore, enthralled the audiences with their entertaining performance.
The children sang Creative Praise, Sunbeam and Grandma’s feather bed among other songs. The tiny tots in the front row had funny faces and sometimes, gave a blank look, trying to sing with the group.
They were also dressed like a frog, mouse, mosquito and rat and enacted Frog went acourting, a folk song.
Dressed like a frog, the kid went down on his knees, and asked Mousie, ‘will you marry me?’, and the Mousie too nodded her head.
Jayanthi Kamalaratnam, artistic director of Crotchets & Quavers, was on the piano, supporting the kids to dance and sing. This is Crotchets’ third annual programme.
Started three years ago, the choir now consists of 57 children.
On the occasion, a presentation on Children’s Home of Hope, a residential home for orphans and destitute children of poor single parents, was screened. Started by Lily Prabhakar in 1970, the home is a house for many underprivileged children.
Towards the end of the evening, The Runaway, a short musical based on the popular tale of Jonah and the Whale was staged. Singing whales, dancing pirates and hordes of children merrily performed the musical with much grace and entertained the spectators.
