Damini ditches beau, returns to family

In what appears to be a case of the return of the prodigal, filmmaker Cheran’s daughter C Damini’s romantic tale had a tame end with the girl ditching her boyfriend by opting to go with her  family. Having stepped out of her home, the girl finally reunited with her parents on Wednesday.

Nevertheless, the Madras High Court witnessed an emotion-packed drama when she told the judges she would like to go with her parents. “I know what I need. Earlier, I was in a confused state. Now, I am very clear,” was her response to the repeated queries from the judges on her change of mind.

Recording the submission, the division bench of justices V Dhanapalan and C T Selvam permitted her to go with her father Cheran, who heaved a sigh of relief. “The detainee, being a major, will be at liberty to go as per her wish,” the bench observed.

Cheran thanked the judges with folded hands. Later he literally prostrated on the floor of the High Court premises, as an expression of gratitude. During her 20-day stay with her school principal, Damini apparently realised her position and misdeeds and ascertained the true identity of Chandru (her lover) and came to a clear conclusion.

Earlier, R Sankara Subbu, counsel for Easwari Ammal, mother of Chandru, who filed a habeas corpus petition seeking to produce Damini in the court and set her at liberty, alleged that Damini had been tutored.
