Students rally for waste management

Express News Service

In a bid to create a social awareness on waste management, students of Madras Christian College Higher Secondary School in association with the Harrington Road Residents Association (HRRA) organised a rally at Chetpet here on Wednesday.

Students assembled in groups of green, blue, red and yellow, signifying different colours of waste segregation. While green stood for organic waste like food and garden waste, blue signified recyclable waste while the red was for landfill waste such as non-biodegradable waste like chips packets, sanitary waste. Yellow marked hazardous waste, besides the e-waste.

Students waved placards to stress the need for segregation to reduce the volume of waste going to landfills. As part of the awareness drive, children will also be conducting campus cleanups, undertake to monitor waste segregation and awareness building among staff and students at their school. Their initiative is supported by the HRRA, whose committee members said that they were striving to make Harrington Road a zero waste road in the coming months with support from the Corporation of Chennai.
