Soft skills training for errant staff

A slew of measures are being taken by the Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC)) to enhance the safety of passengers and road users including motorists, besides keeping tabs on the soft-skills training imparted to the crew, according to a top MTC official.

The MTC website has received about 2 lakh complaints from passengers from July 2012.

The MTC, which had one driving institute in Chrompet opened four more institutes at Anna Nagar, Patullos Road, and Adyar from where three drivers and three conductors from each of the 25 MTC depots were rostered for mandatory training, which will cover essential soft-skills to deal with the passengers.

However, the MTC official admits that there are stray incidents being reported. “The drivers concerned will undergo training. Technically, we have ensured that the speed limits of the MTC fleet stays capped. Besides, we also teach them about the hazards of rash driving. We also stress on following traffic rules signals, not to overtake.

The MTC official adds that strict instructions have been given to conductors, asking them not to entertain students celebrating Bus Day.

With the fleet strength of 3,600 buses operated everyday, the MTC plies close to 50 lakh passengers on any day, with a workforce of about 19,000 employees.
