CHENNAI: Fancy dress, drawing and oratorical competitions in English and Tamil marked this year’s Krishna Janmashtami celebrations organised by Geeta Bhavan Trust in the city. A colourful exhibition showcasing the birth of lord Rama and lord Krishna and their heroic exploits is also underway on the premises of the Trust in Gopalapuram till August 21.

Around 400 school and college students received medals and certificates for their winning performance in various competitions, at a function organised by the Trust here on Monday, when Janmashtami was celebrated across North India. The overall trophies for best performance were bagged by DAV Higher Secondary School, Gopalapuram, and DN Dutt Vaishnav College, Chrompet.

Distributing the prizes, IGP V A Ravikumar chanted slokas from the Bhagavad Gita and exhorted the students to study well and excel in life.

The celebrations, marking the birth of Lord Krishna, began with a Gho (cow) puja and ended around midnight with bhajans and dancing. On Tuesday, there was Nand Utsav, which is held the day after Janmashtami. Special puja and abhishek of lord Krishna was performed to the accompaniment of bhajans. Mahaprasad was distributed to all devotees.
