Twin Delight on Children's Day

CHENNAI: Anyone who was present at the auditorium at Velammal Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Mogappair East on Children’s Day on Friday, would have rubbed their eyes in disbelief.

As part of Children’s Day celebrations, the school had put together 76 pairs of twins from across various sections in the school.

“We had noticed that there were a large number of twins in the school. So, we were thinking of doing something special for them during some celebration. That was when this Children’s Day idea came up. But even we were shocked to see such a huge number,” said Hemalatha Y, the principal of Velammal Matriculation Higher Secondary School.

The event had a line-up of twins dressed identically and in the case of fraternal twins, most had ensured that their attire had at least the same colour combinations.

Some students had gone a step further than the usual gowns and kurtas, wearing heavy, colourful headgears and scarves.

The celebrations had a range of programmes, including a dance to the tune of Gangnam Style, all performed by twins. It is just incredible to look around,” said carnatic musician Archana. She, along with her twin sister Aarathi, were special guests at the event.

“Usually, we are lucky to spot one or two pairs of twins at any function. But here, there are so many; it’s nothing like I’ve seen before,” says Aarathi.

The duo narrated their own experience of being identical twins. “People keep asking us how they can make out one from the other. We are so used to some of these things that nowadays, if someone calls one by the other’s name, we don’t even bother to correct. We just respond to them,” added Aarathi. At the event, awards were given away by chief guests Bombay Sisters — C Saroja and C Lalitha — to the most well-dressed twins, most identical twins and most popular twins.
