Express News Service

CHENNAI: The lift chamber of an under-renovation three storied building on Muthuramalinga Thevar road, where a Korean restaurant once operated, was gutted in a fire on Sunday.

According to fire officials, two labourers were carrying out gas-welding works on the top floor of the chamber when the fire broke out. The fire station received a call from the labourers at 3.55 pm and two fire engines, from Teynampet and Saidapet, were sent immediately. It took them 40 minutes to douse the flames.

According to the contractor, the owner of the building was abroad and renovation works were being carried out prior to re-opening the restaurant.
