Tribute to Late EVK Sampath on B’day

Express News Service

CHENNAI:  The late EVK Sampath, one of the founding fathers of DMK, was remembered on his 90th birth anniversary on Thursday in a function dedicated to him.

At the function organised by the State unit of  Congress, VCK leader Thol Thirumavalavan recalled how Sampath parted ways from his mentor and uncle Periyar and later even the DMK, as only principles mattered to him, not power or position.

“It is a rare quality in today’s political scenario,” he said.

Lamenting the current state of political affairs, where even voters accept money for votes, Congress TN State unit president EVKS Elangovan (son of EVK Sampath) said the function was organised only to let people know that great men once lived amongst us.

“Even well-to-do people who earn a salary of `80,000 are nowadays ready to accept `5,000 to cast their vote for a particular party,” said Elangovan.

Prominent persons from various spheres and political leaders spoke about the late leader Sampath and the need to bring back the culture of issue-based politics in the State, which is currently centred on individuals.
