CHENNAI: On the 200th anniversary of George Boole, the father of modern information technology, the University College Cork (UCC) launched the ‘Boole2School’ campaign across hundreds of schools in India. The UCC launched the programme to introduce elementary Boolean logic to school children aged eight to 18.
Delivering the keynote address, the co-founder of Infosys, Kris Gopalakrishnan said that this was the time to look back and learn from history on how to handle challenges over the emerging lines of data sciences. The UCC claimed that over 1,500 students in India participated in the campaign.
Michael Murphy, president of the UCC, said teachers at the UCC developed age-appropriate lesson plans to introduce students to George Boole (who was the first professor of mathematics at the UCC) as a historical figure, and to use logic and examples from computer games and puzzles.
The university aims to reach students from Classes 1 to 5 to improve their logical thinking, he added. Registration for the campaign and lesson plans are available for teachers to download at georgeboole.com/boole2school
Over 600 classes (for about 15,000 students) have already been registered. The majority are in Ireland, but numbers in the UK, US, India, China, Russia and Australia continue to increase.
