CHENNAI: With a focus on engineering and other arts and science courses, Vel Tech University has introduced three courses in media and communication They were launched by legendary singer P Susheela. The university’s School of Media Technology and Communication will be active in the coming academic year.
During the function, the faculty honoured Susheela with a memento for her Guinness World Record achievement and she sang a few songs for the students. After she launched the new department, the veteran singer addressed the students with a smile: “With such a good college providing education, everyone should study well and I bless the students.”
Dr Rangarajan, founder chancellor and president of Vel Tech University said, “At present, there are Foreign Direct Investment inflows into the information and broadcasting and the print media. To go with the current trend in the education sector, we are offering courses that include BSc in visual communication, electronic and digital media besides MSc in visual communication. We are planning to partner with international universities to give more opportunities and international exposure to students at media houses.”
In the inaugural address, pro-vice chancellor Dr U Chandrasekhar explained why the university came up with the new initiative. He said that the status quo of the Indian media and entertainment sector is rising and the growth in the gaming and animation industry is expected to grow 15-20% per annum.
Vel Tech director of academics, Koteswara Rao said, “Initially we will start the course with 30-35 students and later increase the number of seats. We are planning to communicate with the media houses in India to provide practical exposure for the students. The admissions will be available online and at admission offices.”
The university continued celebrating Ugadi after the launch with multiple competitions.
