CHENNAI: Probably for the first time in a decade, US-based Google hasn’t taken part in the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) campus recruitment and preferred to go completely off-campus.
Meanwhile, another US company Intel emerged as a single largest entity to make 29 offers at IIT Madras. In two days, about 250 students are placed by 50-odd companies.
Kaustubha Mohanty, convener of All-IITs Placement Committee (AIPC), told Express that Google was one of the top-paying companies with a minimum pay package of `1 crore for international postings. However, this year the company had a change of mind and conveyed its decision to go for off-campus recruitment, which was in a way strange and the AIPC did not endorse such off-campus placements.
“Also, Google has a rigorous recruitment process and tends to breach the scheduled time for interviews. As per AIPC norms, a company can’t take more than 60 minutes per candidate. However, some companies take too long depriving the students of looking out for more opportunities. Also, interviews should be taken in person, not via Skype. Certain conditions of Google didn’t sink with our rules and finally Google decided to go for off-campus recruitment,” Mohanty said. Sources said the company had already approached the students directly and vice-versa.
IITians from Delhi, Bombay, Kharagpur, Kanpur and Madras have written online tests conducted by the Google and a few have already got the offers. AIPC convener said students were not missing Google since this year offers from other core companies were overwhelming.
