Yes, it’s a bogus message...Airtel is not giving you free data!

After the huge fuss about free data via Reliance JIO, a false message about Airtel activating free unlimited 4G is doing the rounds

From our online archive

CHENNAI: Various cellular networks have been trying to battle it out to emerge as front runners ever since Reliance Jio SIMs were introduced. With its free and unlimited data, and free calling services, a large number of customers have switched from Airtel, Vodafone and other networks to Reliance.
Therefore, it would be easy to believe that the other networks will come up with their own discounts and offers to attract the public. Over the last week the following message has been going viral: “LOOT OFFER FOR ALL AIRTEL USER:- Due to Jio, Now Airtel market is down so Airtel is activating Unlimited 4G, 3G data for 3 months. Visit Following link to Activate for airtel 3 months 4G, 3G Pack and enjoy. Visit Now:- http://offer-for-all.com/. After the huge fuss about free data via
Reliance JIO, a false message about
Airtel activating free unlimited 4G is
doing the rounds

*Enjoy Friends”
However, like many other scam messages this too went viral but held no truth. Firstly, the bad language of the message is enough to prove that it’s not from Airtel. Second, any information related to Airtel would first come as an SMS to a user’s phone and all the links would only lead to the official Airtel page. The link in the message “http://offer-for-all.com/” does not have any connection to Airtel.
When you click on the link, you’re taken to a new page which has the Airtel logo and the 90-day offer. The website asks the customer’s name, phone number and the state of residence. Even if the scam site successfully fools the customer, the next page on the site demands the usually “share to eight people to proceed with action”.

Ironically, the website asked the user to “not try and cheat” by not sharing the message and states that it will only allow the customer to proceed if sharing is done. The site also clearly asks the customer to download its “sponsor apps” in the next stage. These sponsor apps more often than not contain malware that could corrupt the customer’s phone.
Therefore, it’s safe to say that while the offers were unbelievably attractive, they were also too good to be true.
