Six men held in case of security guard's murder

They were arrested with the help of CCTV footage; search on to nab one more suspect

CHENNAI: NEARLY a month-and-a-half after a 53-year-old security guard of a cash management company got murdered in broad day light in front of the TASMAC outlet at Sentil Nagar in Kolathur,  city police claimed to have cracked the case by arresting six people.

The were identified as V Narayana Babu (36), S Ramesh Kumar (36), C Siva Kumar (30), C Vijay (31), S Thangavelayudam (27), P Ganesh (34). A manhunt is on for one more accused who is still at large. Police also seized a car and two bikes from the suspects.

A senior police officer said that with the help of CCTV footage we were able to secure images of the suspects which were circulated to all the police stations. “During a routine vehicle-check at Villivakkam, Narayana Babu and his friend Ramesh Kumar - both drivers from Perungalathur - were detained for inquiry during which they confessed to their crime,” said the officer.

Narayanan told the police that he had roped in his relative Thangavelayudam and his co-brother Ganesh and plotted to rob the collection van. The trio also roped in Siva and Vijay from Thootukudi for the operation. Police added that the duo already had murder cases pending against them in Thootukudi.

It is to be recalled that Rajendran, a resident of Radhakrishnan Street at M R R Nagar in Avadi, worked as a security guard at Radiant Cash Management, an agency which collects cash from Tasmac outlets. On April 25, the victim along with collection agent Mohan (65) and driver Vinod Kumar were travelling in a car across the suburbs collectign money from Tasmac outlets.

“Narayanan, Siva Kumar and Vijay kept following van and when the collection team reached the TASMAC outlet at Sentil Nagar in Kolathur, Rajendran stayed back to guard the `40 lakh cash kept in the car while the agent went to collect money from the TASMAC. Meanwhile, three men approached the car and threw chilly powder on Rajendran and attacked him with sickles and tried to rob the money. They failed in their attempt and on seeing the public,they fled the spot on a motor-bike. Rajendran, was rushed to Kilpauk Medical College, which referred him to the Stanley Medical College and Hospital, where he succumbed.
