CHENNAI: Doctors have declared that a four-year-old has lost sight in one of his eyes after he was poked with a pencil by another child. The boy, D Pradeep, an LKG student at a school in Mogappair, was at a tuition centre in Thirumangalam when another child of the same age allegedly poked a pencil into his eye.

His relatives said the doctors told them that it is unlikely that the boy would regain sight in the injured eye.

The child’s father, V Velu, said he got a call from the teacher asking them to rush to the tuition centre as his son was injured.

“When we got there, the teacher said her niece had poked my son in the eye and asked us to rush him to the hospital.”

However, according to Velu, the tuition teacher then changed her account and said that the boy hurt himself when he fell down. “My son and all the other children at the centre say that he was in fact poked, but the teacher is now denying it,” he said.

The aggrieved father approached the police to register a complaint alleging negligence on the part of the tuition centre. According to Velu, the doctors have said that they cannot save the eye and will not be able to do a transplant. “I did not realise how serious the injury was till much later,” he said.
