CHENNAI: Rain and thundershowers are likely in many parts of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry in the next couple of days owing to the formation of an upper air cyclonic circulation over the western bay of North Tamil Nadu and South Andhra Pradhesh, according to the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) in Chennai.

The sky is likely to be cloudy. “We are expecting heavy rainfall in the delta region (Thanjavur, Nagapattinam and Thiruvarur) and in the interior parts of northern Tamil Nadu, in places like Tiruvannamalai, Salem and Dharmapuri,” said S Balachandran, director of RMC. Chennai is likely to experience rain or thundershowers during the evening or night, he added.

South-west monsoon has been vigorous over Tamil Nadu. “Yesterday’s (Saturday) north-south trough from Rayalaseema to Gulf of Mannar is now seen as an upper air cyclonic circulation over coastal Tamil Nadu and neighbourhood and extends up to 0.9 kilometres above mean sea level. An upper air cyclonic circulation lies over the south-west Bay of Bengal off North Tamil Nadu-South Andhra Pradesh coasts between 1.5 and 3.6 Kilometres above mean sea level,” said Balachandran. The monsoon has been moderate over the Bay of Bengal, the Arabian Sea and the Andaman Sea.

Maximum and minimum temperatures are likely to be around 31 and 27 degrees Celsius respectively.

The rainfall recorded in Tamil Nadu between July 1 and August 13 is 177 mm. This is 21 per cent more than the average rainfall recorded around this time of the year, according to officials from the meteorological department. Polur in Tiruvannamalai district had received the highest rainfall of 14 cm in the last 24 hours. Tindivanam (Villupuram Dist), Tiruvannamalai, Tirupathi and Tiruvaiyaru received 10cm each.
