CHENNAI: The State higher education department, which is currently grappling with the issue of fake certificates, is expecting assistance from police for speedy disposal of cases under inquiry.

In one such case, two professors from Namakkal Kavignar Ramalingam government arts college for women were suspended for not only allegedly producing forged certificates but also fabricating government replies.

Two women professors were appointed to the departments of botany and computer science through the Teachers Recruitment Board (TRB) in 2015. While verifying the genuineness of the certificates, the higher education department authorities sought help from Bihar University, from where both the teaching staff claimed to have completed their postgraduate degree.

“The assistant professors had allegedly bribed a clerical staff in Bihar University to block this communication sent from Tamil Nadu and they had fabricated the reply to be issued by the varsity,” said highly-placed sources in the department.

Getting suspicious over the format in which the reply was given, IAS officer Rajendra Ratnoo, who was holding additional charge over Tamil Nadu collegiate education directorate, sought help from his batchmate, the commissioner of technical education in Bihar.

Ratnoo said, “We received a reply confirming that both the professors had submitted forged documents.” It is learnt that both went absconding after they were placed under suspension.

Higher education secretary Sunil Paliwal said they were expecting support from police to solve not only these  cases, but other ones also which were pending for years.
