CHENNAI: The Tamil Nadu government has sought the Central government’s approval for a sea water desalination plant in Chennai.

Finance minister D Jayakumar submitted proposals to Union finance minister Arun Jaitley for a Rs 5,300 crore desalination project that will address the drinking water needs of Chennai.

Presently, two desalination plants with a capacity of 100 mld (million litres per day) each are located at Minjur and Nemmeli.

The state has also sought central clearance for the second phase of Chennai Metro rail, road and infrastructure projects.
