CHENNAI:  Just a month after a sudden road cave in trapped a bus and a car on Anna Salai in Chennai, a similar incident occurred on Saturday on arterial EVR Periyar Salai at Kilpauk.

On this stretch also, the underground Metro Rail construction is underway. Metro Rail officials said today’s cave in was also due to “loose soil”.

The collapse was spotted in the early hours near Ega Theatre and was nearly five feet deep.

Luckily, no vehicle was crossing the spot when the crater formed. Being a Saturday, blocking of a portion did not affect vehicular movement.

The latest instance follows a string of earlier such incidents, including a huge sinkhole on arterial Anna Salai on April 9 in which two vehicles, including an  MTC bus, got trapped.
