CHENNAI: While it must be appreciated that civil service aspirants are increasingly turning to Chennai’s Anna Nagar rather than Delhi, it should not turn into a pressure pot for students like Rajasthan’s Kota, said Congress leader P Chidambaram on Sunday.

Chidambaram was speaking at the inauguration of Shankar IAS Academy’s new premises in Shanthi Colony, Anna Nagar, also attended by the academy’s alumni, students and parents. “GST exemption should be given to coaching classes for NEET and IAS. This would help parents in a big way.”

He also said that there was a lack of a clear definition of OBC as the income criterion was considered for rejecting OBC status, adding that last year about 180 students were disqualified because of the criterion.

The academy was started in 2004 with a group of 36 by its director D Shankar. It  claims to have trained more than 5,000 by now, creating at least 700 bureaucrats.
