CHENNAI: The Tamil Nadu Fisheries University is considering a proposal to reserve seats for candidates from fishing community whose father died in the sea, either shot dead or in accident, officials said.
The university’s board of management has given its nod for the proposal, which now has to get the State government’s clearance.
“We are suggesting five seats like a special category for children of fishermen who lost their lives in accident or during a fight,” university vice-chancellor S Felix told Express. However, the government has to give clearance and issue a GO in this regard if this proposal is to be implemented, he said.
“The proposal is to reserve seats for both Bachelor of Fisheries Science (BFSC) and BE (Fisheries Engineering), and for MFSC and ME (Fisheries Engineering),” he said.
However, while this would be a welcome news for the fishing community, another official from the university expressed apprehension. According to him, reserving seats for one community might raise questions from other communities, making it a not so easy decision for the government to implement.
